Helen Flaminio

Helen Flaminio, 94, of Kingsford, passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford. She was born March 29, 1917 in Niagara, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Thomas and Valeria (Socha) Nowak. Helen was a lifelong resident of the area. She attended the Kingsford schools, graduating from Kingsford High School in 1934. She married Alfred A. "Oscar" Flaminio on September 10, 1938 in Indiana, and he preceded her in death in 1990. Helen worked as a secretary at Lakeshore Inc. for many years, retiring in 1984. She was a member of the American Martyr's Catholic Church, and a past member of the Elks Club and the Oak Crest Country Club. Helen was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing and traveling. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, George, Thomas and Joseph Nowak, and one sister, Ann Colantonio. Helen is survived by her two daughters, Julie (Richard) Unger of Appleton, WI. and Cathy (Bill) Dyer of Aurora; her sister, Bernice Altobelli of Iron Mountain; four grandchildren, Jodie (Kevin) Mensink, Elissa (Wade) Little, Stacie (Shane) Riddle, and Ross Dyer; six great-grandchildren, Jake and Ella Little, Carter and Hailey Mensink, Layla and Marley Riddle; she is further survived by numerous nieces and nephews, three of whom held a special place in her heart, Jodie Altobelli, Steve Altobelli, and Patt Dumlao. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012 from 9:30am- 10:30 am at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral Mass will follow at 11:00am at the American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Pallbearers will be Richard Unger, Bill Dyer, Steve Altobelli, James Flaminio, Michael Flaminio, Peter Flaminio, and Larry Flaminio. In lieu of flowers a memorial will be established in her memory.
