Phyllis L. Bray-Bargo

Phyllis L. Bray-Bargo, 101, of Gladstone, passed away on Sunday, July 17, 2022, at OSF St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. She was the pillar of our family. Phyllis was born January 6, 1921, in Loretto, MI, daughter of the late Newton and Louise (Enama) Chellew. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1939 and went on to get her certification as a licensed beautician. She married Edward Bray on February 15, 1942 at St. Barbara’s Church, and he preceded her in death in 1972. She later married Jack Bargo and he also preceded her in death. Phyllis was employed for several years in the Medical Records department at the VA Hospital before retiring in 1983. She was a member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Vulcan. She enjoyed bowling, shopping, traveling, flower gardening, and loved animals, especially her pets. Phyllis always displayed grace and a wonderful sense of style and adventure. Her family stated, “the longer you stayed, the longer we wanted you to stay!” She is survived by her son, Jeff Bray; three daughters, Pat (Galen) Steffel, Sally Hampton, and Sandy (Terry) Calvi; grandchildren, Mark Steffel (Fiance, Karen), Megan (Tim) Chong, Jeremy Bolek, Jennifer Bolek, and Tyler Calvi; great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Grace Chong, Kashton Calvi, and Bella Bolek; several nieces and nephews including special nieces, Joyce (Ward) Trevillian and Karyn (Bill) Kelly. In addition to her parents and husbands, Phyllis was also preceded in death by a beloved daughter, Marsha Bray; a precious great grandson, Aidan Bolek; a loving brother, Everett Chellew; a devoted son-in-law, Jerry Hampton; and an infant brother, Charles Chellew. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday at St. Barbara's Catholic Church in Vulcan. A memorial mass will follow at 12:00 p.m. at the church. Fr. Martin Flynn will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Norway Township Cemetery.
