MaryEllen Gallino

MaryEllen Gallino, 83, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2016, at Evergreen Meadows in Norway, Michigan surrounded by her family. She was born on February 24, 1932 in Menominee Michigan, the daughter of the late Leo and Angie (Rivolta) Godin. MaryEllen graduated from Perkins High School in 1950 and then went on to nursing school at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Bloomington, Il, graduating in 1953 with a R.N. degree. She started her nursing career at the V.A.Hospital in Iron Mountain in 1953, where she met her husband, Bernie Gallino. They were married on October 8, 1955. Bernie and MaryEllen spent 52 wonderful years together before Bernie passed away in 2008. MaryEllen was a woman of great faith. She enjoyed life to the fullest. She was a very dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and aunt. She enjoyed being a nurse and worked at the original Mary Hill Manor in Niagara for 18 years and then at the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain until her retirement in 1993. Mary Ellen loved to volunteer. She offered her time and talent over the years at the local cancer organization, the Caring House, the gift shop at the Dickinson Hospital, and the Senior Citizens Center. She was a member of the Friends of the Museum, taught CCD classes when her children were younger, and was an active 4H Leader for many years. MaryEllen loved to play cards, bocce ball, read, and knit. MaryEllen is survived by her three children Mary (Tom) Wendt of Spread Eagle, Ann (Mike) Sokop of Delafield, Wisc., and Joey (Carol) Gallino of Niagara; grandchildren: Jake and Jackie Sokop (fiancé Jake Nicholson); Heather, Lindsay, Vinny, and A.J. Gallino; and Sheena (Jeff) Haverty; great grandchildren: Callie, Phoebe and Willow; sister Rozanne (John) Carter; sister-in-law, Anne Godin; her dear special cousin, Patti Rosenblum, and many loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Fred Godin. MaryEllen and her family were very blessed beyond words as she was able to spend the last 5 years of her life residing at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford and Evergreen Meadows Memory Care Unit in Norway where she received superior care, wonderful love, and compassion by the staff each and every day. Her family wishes to thank and express their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the staff that so lovingly cared for their mom. Private family services are being held.
