Lynn Ann Sand

Lynn Ann Sand, 71, of Iron Mountain, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on March 30, 2020, after suffering with “ALS.” Lynn was born in 1949 in Iron Mountain, daughter of Robert F. and Lois Larson. Lynn graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1967 and from Illinois Masonic Medical School of Nursing in 1970 with a Registered Nurse Degree. She worked at Illinois Masonic Hospital as a head nurse until she decided to move back to Iron Mountain. She worked at the Veterans Hospital for a few years before deciding to be a stay at home mom. Lynn kept up with her continuing nurses education requirements, and when her daughters were older, she worked part time as an RN for Dr. Mitchell. After retiring from nursing, she performed insurance physicals. Lynn married David Sand in 1974 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Iron Mountain. Lynn was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity and a 7th generation Episcopalian. Lynn and Dave raised two daughters, Sarah Ann Wenzel and Amy Sand, both of Iron Mountain. Lynn was a loving, compassionate and spiritual person. She was active throughout her school years. As a junior in high school, she was the Honored Queen of Job’s Daughters, the youth division of Eastern Star. Lynn was a Campfire Leader for both daughters. She also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Lynn enjoyed knitting, playing the piano, tennis, golf, and downhill skiing. Every weekend for years, Dave, Lynn, Sarah and Amy went skiing together. Lynn loved to sing and play hymns on the piano, and she sang in the junior and senior choir at church. Lynn served on the Vestry and various committees at Holy Trinity. She was a Eucharistic Visitor, Hospital Pastoral Care Visitor, Lecture, Flower Coordinator, and member of the Funeral Committee. Lynn and Dave were discerned and trained for 3 years, and then in 2010 were ordained as priests in the Episcopal Church. Lynn and Dave were blessed to be able to baptize two of their granddaughters. Lynn served until mid 2019 when her health would not allow her to continue. Lynn brought spiritual help and comfort to those she ministered to. Lynn’s passion was knitting. Her grandmother, Lorraine, taught her to knit. In her life, she knitted thousands of hats, scarfs, prayer shawls, prayer blankets and afghans. She also knitted over 1,000 children’s hats and scarfs, which she donated to the Salvation Army, Caring House, Veterans Family Program and cancer patients. Lynn also loved to play the piano. Her grandmother, Lorraine, taught her to play and encouraged her to take lessons, which she did for 10 years. Lynn continued to play throughout her life. Lynn taught her two daughters to play and encouraged and supported their lessons. She was also able to teach piano basics to two of her granddaughters. The disease, ALS, took away her ability to knit and play the piano, which saddened her. Dave and Lynn were married for 46 years. They renewed their vows on their 40th wedding anniversary at Holy Trinity with their friends and Priest Candy Buchcuski presiding. Lynn and Dave had a tradition that they did every year on their wedding anniversary. They would light a candle, listen to their wedding ceremony, which they had recorded, look at their wedding photos and have a glass of champagne. Another tradition they had for about 15 years was after church, they would play three games of Cribbage, enjoy a “Bloody Mary” and split a pizza for lunch. They enjoyed each other’s company and had a wonderful life together. Lynn loved to cook and spend time with her family. She was a member of Pine Grove Country Club for 45 years, a member of Eastern Star, and a member of the S & B Girls Coffee and Lunch Group for 8 years. They met weekly at Moose Jackson for coffee, conversation and lunch. Lynn always looked forward to attending their weekly get togethers. She had “Lots of Fun.” Lynn is survived by her husband, David; daughters, Sarah Ann (Tim) Wenzel and Amy Sand; three granddaughters, Kate, Jane and Claire Wenzel; mother, Lois Larson; brother, Dale (Carol) Larson ; two nieces, Carlene Larson and Abby Smith; and her friend and neighbor, Fran Cerasoli, a retired RN who would help Lynn at any time, day or night. Also by special friends, Mary and David Johnson. Lynn is preceded in death by her father, Robert F. Larson and her infant sister, Kathy Sue Larson. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 17th from 10:00 am until 12:00 noon at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Private funeral services will be held at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
