John Martinson

MERRIMAN - John A. Martinson, 60, of Merriman, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. He was born on April 17, 1947, the son of the late Oscar and Constance (Dodaro) Martinson. John graduated from Kingsford High School in 1965. He was proud to have served in the U.S. Army from 1966-1969, where he was stationed in Germany. John worked in excavating and maintenance at Dickinson Homes for 35 years on June 1, 2007. He was a member of the Eagle River Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). John married Janice Carlson on Aug. 29, 1970, in Iron Mountain. He enjoyed spending time and boating at his cottage in Eagle River. He was a good marksman and enjoyed deer hunting. He only needed one bullet to shoot a deer. John was a very talented handyman who could make and fix anything. He liked to feed and watch the deer. He also liked to watch westerns, especially ones with John Wayne, and The Guiding Light. John is survived by his wife, Janice; a special niece, Angela (Dylan) Paterson of Ishpeming; a special great-niece, Kiersten "Peanut" Malone; two special great-nephews, Matthew Malone and Dylan Paterson Jr.; one brother, Ted Martinson of California; one sister, Gwen Dockery of California; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie (Bruce) Burkman of Kingsford and Kathy Carlson of Iron Mountain; one brother-in-law, Jack (Karyn) Carlson of Granite Bluff; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Emma Dennis; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Geneva and Clyde Samson; and a brother-in-law, Ken Carlson. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will b held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Quinnesec Cemetery at 1:00pm on Friday Graveside military rites will be accorded by VFW Post 3674 and the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50.
