Jean Johnson

IRON MOUNTAIN - Jean I. Johnson of Iron Mountain, passed away on March 14, 2009, at Hyland Nursing Home following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Lester W. Johnson and had lived in the area all her life. Jean was born April 16, 1923, the daughter of the late Irma and Eric Wahlstrom. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1941 and went to work for the Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for seven years. She and her husband met at First Lutheran Church when they were young, were married in 1946 and were life-long members of the church. During the early years of their marriage Jean was associated with her husband in the cabinet business before it became Les-Cove Inc. She was a life member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Women's Club, LCW of First Lutheran Church, the Hospital League and Zonta Club. Jean was a people person and had many good friends and neighbors who were close to her during her lifetime. She and Les especially loved the time spent at their Bush Lake cabin with family and friends where they enjoyed hunting and fishing. The wonderful staff members at Victorian Pines and Hyland were very special and dedicated caregivers to her and the Johnson family thanks them for their professionalism. Jean leaves behind three children, Janis (Al) Cortez of Brentwood, Calif., Sally Duerr of Kennesaw, Ga. and David (Jamie) Johnson of Minocqua, Wis.; her grandchildren, Adam and Alex Duerr, Eric and Emily Johnson and Katie Cortez who adored her; her brother, Jack (Betty) Wahlstrom of Pine Creek; sister, Colleen (Harold) Soderberg of Spread Eagle, Wis. and many special nieces, nephews and several cousins. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 18 at First Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain with visitation in the Chapel from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the memorial service in the nave at 11 a.m. Rev. James Chinery will officiate. Jean's ashes, along with those of her husband, Les, will then be placed next to each other in their columbarium at Cemetery Park.
