Jean D. Harris

Jean D. Harris, 88, of Iron Mountain, formerly of Pembine, found eternal peace on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. She was born on Feb. 22, 1928 in Laona, WI, the daughter of the late Walter and Bertha (Hagengruber) Ammerman. Jean was raised in Laona and graduated from Laona High School. She earned her Registered Nursing Degree from St. Mary Nursing School in Wausau, WI where she also met her future husband, Ted. Jean worked as a R.N. for over fifty years and was known for her patience and kindness from her start in OB through later years in Geriatrics. Jean married the love of her life, Edward "Ted" Harris on Oct. 21, 1952 in Laona. They honeymooned in Great Falls, MT when Ted returned from his deployment to France. They have been referred to as the “Notebook” couple by many people who had the opportunity to witness their devotion and love for one another. They moved to a beautiful parcel of land in Pembine following their retirement where they spent over 20 wonderful years enjoying the beauty of the north woods. They took great pleasure feeding and watching the abundance of wildlife outside their front door. Jean was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed by her children and grandchildren. She is survived by three children Barb (John) Melcarek of Wales, WI, Mary (Mike) Geyer of Green Bay, WI, and Jeff (Kathy) Harris of Stephenson MI, one sister Arlene Neuman of Brookfield, five grandchildren Niki Middleton, Brett (Danielle) Melcarek, Caiti (Jeremy) Santorelli, Alex Middleton (Morgan), and Ryan Melcarek, three great grandchildren Elliana Santorelli and Elijah and River Middleton, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ted, on March 15, 2015, her daughter Jennifer "Jenny Bell" Popp, and two brothers Curly and Specks Ammerman. Visitation will be Tuesday from 10-11am at St. Leonard Catholic Church in Laona. Funeral services will follow at 11am at the church. Father John Cerkas will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in the Laona Cemetery. Special thanks to the staff at Victorian Pines in Iron Mountain for their care and compassion. The family invites guests to wear jeans or casual clothing in lieu of somber funeral attire. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
