Donald Hertig

Niagara - Donald E. Hertig, 73, of Niagara, died Friday, January 4, 2008 at Maryhill Manor. He was born on Nov. 1, 1934 in Dunbar, WI the son of the late Earl and Elsie (Kehl) Hertig. Don received the Babe Ruth Baseball award while in high school. He graduated from Pembine High School and served in the U.S. Army. He worked at the Niagara Paper Mill as an instrument man for many years, retiring in 1997 He married Marilyn Leonard on June 18, 1955 at the Union Protestant Church in Niagara. She preceded him in death on July 19, 2002. Don was a volunteer for the Niagara Rescue Squad/Niagara Area Emergency Unit for over forty years. He also was a volunteer for the Niagara Historical Society. He served on the Marinette County Board of Supervisors and was a First Aid Instructor. Don was a Boy Scout Leader and received the Order of the Arrow Award for his dedication. He was also a member of the Riverside United Methodist Church. In 2006 Don was given the honor of being named "Mr. Niagara". Don enjoyed wood carving and was a member of the Wood Bee Carvers. He also enjoyed flower gardening and square dancing. Don liked to travel and enjoyed his visits to Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Alaska, and Calgary, Canada. He is survived by two daughters Denise (Dan) Duke of Sobieski, WI and Dani (Mike) Poquette of Iron Mountain, one brother Harold (Sharon) Hertig of Gladstone, five grandchildren Casey and Josh Poquette and Aaron, Colin, and Ian Duke, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son David Hertig on Feb. 13, 2007 and one sister-in-law Carol (Russell) Sauld. Visitation will be Wed. Jan. 9, from 4-7 pm at the Riverside United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Wed.at 7pm at the church. Rev. Patricia Herdt will officiate. Burial will be in the Niagara Cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Niagara Area Emergency Unit.
