David Lee Schaefer

David Lee Schaefer, 64, of Vulcan went to his heavenly home on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. He went peacefully, in the comfort of his own home, surrounded by his loving family. Dave was born in Paw Paw, MI, on March 12, 1959, to Julius and Carole (Long) Schaefer. He was a graduate of Paw Paw High School. On April 4, 1981, in Kalamazoo, MI, he married Elizabeth Brondyke whom he lovingly called “Beth”. A multi-talented man, Dave's diverse work history included various sales positions: lawn and yard care, commercial truck driving, and (his favorite) charter boat captain. An avid outdoorsman, Dave enjoyed hunting, gardening, and had a particular passion for fishing. He made many friends over the years through fishing and was known for sharing his love for it with his grandkids and friends, young and old alike. He was a talented guitarist and never passed up an opportunity to sing along with a tune or attend one of the kids’ or grandkids’ music concerts or recitals. He was always eager to share his time and culinary specialties with family and friends. He especially liked to make homemade bread and buttermilk pancakes. Most of all, faith and family were incredibly important to Dave. In his last months Dave expressed repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, as he realized his need for a Saviour. He sought forgiveness from his family and was sure to communicate how deeply he loved each one of them. His greatest desire was that God would be glorified in and through his life, his battle with cancer, and his passing. He was overjoyed to become a member of Redemption Hill Church. David will be deeply missed by his wife of over 40 years, Elizabeth "Becky" Schaefer; children, Corinne (Tim) Larson, Zac Schaefer, and Joshua Schaefer; grandchildren, Mattea, Talia, Isaac, Karisa, and Sammy Larson; mother, Carole Schaefer; siblings, Paul Schaefer (Carla), Keith Schaefer (Sandra), Ron (Sue) Schaefer, and Gary (Stacy) Schaefer; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dave (Jan) Brondyke and Heather Roush; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends. David is preceded in death by his father, Julius Schaefer, and his parents-in-law, Neil and Carol Brondyke. Visitation will be at Redemption Hill Church, 332 S. Carpenter Ave, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, with Pastor Brent Griffin officiating the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Dave's family would like to thank the staff of OSF Home Hospice, Bellin Memorial Hospital in Green Bay, Bellin Health Iron Mountain, and Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson, with special thanks to Dr. McCarty in the Emergency Department, as well as Donnelle Romick, (whom he loved as his own daughter) for her devoted care in his last weeks, Melanie Washbish, his church family, and all of the special family and friends who offered outstanding care and support during his short but intense battle with cancer.
