Carrie Marttila

Carrie E. Marttila, a longtime resident of Iron Mountain, passed away on Saturday evening, November 13, 2010 in her home following a four year long, courageous battle with cancer. Carrie was born July 5, 1947 in Hancock, a twin daughter of the late Daniel R. and Dollene L. (Rickard) Cooney. As a child she resided in Hurontown and attended St. Ignatious Loyola School through the eighth grade and received her high school diploma from Houghton High in 1965. On August 19, 1972 she was united in marriage to Thomas J. Marttila at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Houghton. The couple made their home and raised two children in Iron Mountain after residing in Escanaba and Grayling. Carrie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain where she was a baptismal assistant for many years. As a young adult, she worked at WHDF radio station and the Houghton National Bank. Upon moving to Iron Mountain she became employed at the First National Bank – North Office for 13 years. She retired in 2004 and spent the remaining years devoted to her family and grandchildren. Carrie enjoyed playing Bingo and along with her husband worked Saturday night Bingo at Immaculate Conception Parish. She was an avid “Mountaineer” and particularly enjoyed watching her two sons play football. She was extremely proud having watched both of her sons play their final senior game for the state championship in the Pontiac Sivlerdome. Carrie loved and enjoyed people and valued all her friendships and relationships throughout the years. She was always optimistic and never complained even during her fight against cancer. She never wanted to be a burden. Carrie touched the lives of those who came in contact with her and she will be deeply missed. She fought an incredible fight and never lost faith or hope. Preceding her in death were her parents, Daniel and Dollene Cooney; her twin sister, Katherine Mattson; and an older sister, Luella Latvis. Surviving is her husband, Thomas; her children, Daniel Lee and Robin Allen (Jennifer) Marttila, both of Iron Mountain; two grandchildren, Ian Thomas and Ava Jane; two brothers, Ross Cooney of Green Bay and Daniel (Sandy) Cooney of Houghton; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Your family and friends will miss you! Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of the Christian Burial. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Carrie’s family would like to thank the doctors and staff at the Dickinson County Hospital and the Marshfield Clinic, and family, friends and neighbors who have sent good wishes and prayers her way these past years.
