Andrew Papp, M.D.

IRON MOUNTAIN - Andrew J. Papp, M.D. of Iron Mountain, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, March 30, 2007. Dr. Papp, 83, was born in Revere, Mass., the son of Joseph and Sophie (Kassay) Papp. Dr. Papp had been a roofer and sheet metal worker prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the Army Air Corps, applied for pilot training, became a commissioned officer and an Army Air Corps pilot. Following discharge from the service, he with several brothers, owned and operated a roofing and sheet metal construction company until he decided to further his education. He married the former Barbara I. Platt in August, 1948, entered Tufts College in Medford, Mass. and graduated from the University of Southern California School of Medicine in 1956. Dr. Papp served his internship at the Long Beach, Calif. Veterans Hospital, and his specialty training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Following private practice in San Diego, he returned to the Long Beach Veterans Hospital as chief of the Non-Tuberculous Pulmonary Disease Section. He was later transferred to the Reno, Nev. Veterans Hospital as chief of medicine, and in 1976 came to the Iron Mountain Veterans Hospital as chief of the medical service and later promoted to chief of staff until he retired in 1991. Academic appointments include clinical instructor of medicine, UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles; clinical instructor of medicine, University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City, Utah; and clinical associate professor of medicine, University of Nevada School of Medical Sciences, Reno. He has been a member of several professional organizations, past president of the Iron Mountain/Kingsford Serra Club, and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Barbara; sons, Dr. Charles (Christine) Papp and Michael (Amy) Papp of Iron Mountain, Andrew (Mary) Papp Jr. of Lorena, Texas; daughters, Barbara (Rodney) Hirte of Aurora, Wis., Kathleen (George) Walden of Reno; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, George (Janet) Papp of LaMesa, Calif.; sisters, Arlene Bench and Alice Helm of San Diego, and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Papp was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Harry, James, Charles, Joseph and Edward Papp Visitation will be held on Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of the Christian Burial. Burial will take place in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Dr. Papp's grandsons will serve as pallbearers; Tom Bray, Bob Bray, Scott Bray, Cody Bray, Micheal Papp and Steven Papp. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Immaculate Conception Capital Campaign would be appreciated.
