George J. Blagec

March 3, 1926 - January 31, 2014

George J. Blagec, 87, of Kingsford, passed away on Friday, January 31, 2014 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital.

George was born March 3, 1926 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Emil and Anna (Kobasic) Blagec. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1944 and was a lifelong resident of the area. Following graduation, George was drafted into the United States Navy and he served his country during WWII. He was employed by U.S. Steel on the Ore boats for over 43 years, starting as a deckhand and later as a wheelsman, retiring in 1986. A big part of George's life was being a very faithful member of American Martyrs Catholic Church. He was a dedicated servant to God, never faultering in his faith and in turn touched many lives. He was also a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Bishop Baraga Council 1585 and served as Grand Knight. George was an avid sports fan. He could recite statistics of any MLB player and was especially fond of Ted Williams, Stan Musial and Joe Dimaggio often saying"Those three guys were so talented they looked good striking out." He had a uncanny ability at remembering names and dates. He especially enjoyed cheering on the Kingsford Flivvers and was a permanent fixture in the south end bleachers at Flivver Field.

He is survived by many nieces, nephews and a sister-in-law, Beverly Blagec.

George was preceded in death by his two brothers, Peter and Joseph Blagec.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:30am at the Kingsford Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Dave, Dale, Duane, Trinity, Evan, Ethan and Brent Blagec.
