Delores "Dee" R. Laydon

July 22, 1927 - January 10, 2022

Delores “Dee” R. Laydon, 94, of Kingsford passed away Monday, January 10, 2022, at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford. Dee was born July 22, 1927, in Iron Mountain, the daughter of Jacob and Mary (Zitkovitz) Rubbo. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1945 and married Gordon Laydon on September 24, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Dee worked as an accountant for Santoni Lumber and Fuel and later for Dickinson Homes. Dee was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and a former member of the Pine Grove Country Club, Chippewa Club, and the American Business Women of America (ABWA). In her younger years she was active in the local Tuesday night women's bowling leagues. She also had a passion for playing cards and was a member of two long running card clubs. These clubs provided long lasting friendships, travel, shared meals, and of course the occasional glass of wine. Dee loved her family and friends, and her house was the hub of holiday gatherings, parties, and many an after-work cocktail hour. She was known as “Gramma Dee'' by not only her grandkids, but any of their friends who were fortunate enough to have crossed her path. Dee was a special person, as witnessed by many, and she will be greatly missed. Dee is survived by two sons, John Laydon of Spread Eagle, WI, and James (Mel) Laydon of Iron Mountain; sisters-in-law, Rita Rubbo of Colorado and Eleanore Laydon of Wisconsin ; four grandchildren, Matthew Laydon of Charleston, SC, Melissa Menghini of Kingsford, Adam (Danielle) Laydon of Iron Mountain, and Ashlie Laydon (Garren Andrews) of Bingen, WA; and six great-grandchildren, Lily, Maggie, Andrew, Sam, Gavyn and Ryken. She is also survived by special friends Mike and Mary Pini and Clarice Aimone. Dee was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, and a brother Robert Rubbo. She was also preceded in death by her lifelong friends Clem and Eva Fiera. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Evergreen Assisted Living for their unending patience, compassion, and care during Dee’s final months. A funeral mass will be held 11:00 am Thursday, January 13 at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in Dee’s memory. Condolences to the family of Delores “Dee” R. Laydon may be expressed online at www.ernashfuneralhomes.com The family has entrusted the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain.
