David L. Grenfell
January 12, 1945 - January 12, 2022
David L. Grenfell, 77, of Kingsford passed away on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at his home. He was born January 12, 1945 in Iron Mountain, MI, son of the late Llewelyn and Julia (Serena) Grenfell. David attended Iron Mountain Schools and was a resident of the area for most of his life. Dave married Therese “Terry” Pankonen on June 20, 1992 at Maranatha Assembly of God, in Kingsford. The two of them shared over 30 years together. Dave and Terry enjoyed traveling around the country and were avid members of NARCOA (North American Railcar Operators Association). They had many treasured memories of their railway adventures together. Additionally, Dave was a car enthusiast and has been a longtime member of the Just Cruzin’ Car Club in Iron Mountain. The two of them enjoyed spending time with friends and family, traveling, classic car rides, bonfires, feeding the deer & squirrels, and watching the birds. Even at a young age, Dave was an entrepreneur. While his older brothers asked for BB guns for Christmas, Dave asked for a welder. No matter what the task was, Dave tackled it “head-on.” He was extremely hard-working, dedicated, and passionate. Dave was a “jack of all trades.” He was extremely talented and had a unique ability to acquire an item, piece of machinery, or building, and put his own “spin” on it to make it multi-functional. In earlier years, Dave was the owner of a dam in lower Michigan. Many summers were spent tending to the dam and ensuring it ran efficiently. In the years to follow, Dave has had a wide variety of jobs throughout the years. His skill-set and special talents have led him in numerous directions. In the community, Dave was responsible for the construction of multiple buildings and businesses. He has designed and manufactured powerline equipment, as well as worked as an advisor/consultant within the industry. As busy as he was, Dave was never too busy to miss his daily “scrap-run,” to Schneider Metal. He was always “on the hunt,” for the best scrap metal to be found. Given all of his “adventures,” in life, Dave was most passionate about his love for aviation. He has been a pilot for the past 50 years, and has owned numerous planes over the course of his lifetime. Despite a few “incidents,” he continued to remain loyal and dedicated to his love of flying. He is survived by his wife, Terry; two sons, Todd (Donna) Grenfell, and their son, Eli, of Suamico, WI and Glenn (Kim) Grenfell, and their children, Dominic and Addison, of Iron Mountain; step-son, Scott (Linda) Colantonio of Oshkosh, WI and their children, Anthony Colantonio of West Bend, WI, Daniel Colantonio of Alexandria, VA, Julia Colantonio of Lacey, WA; step-daughter, Kristie (Faron) Thompson, and their children, Nathan and Sami, of Chandler, AZ; a brother, Thomas (Kay) Grenfell of Kingsford; and several nieces and nephews including a special niece, Norma Lindstrom. In addition to his parents, Dave was preceded in death by a brother, Bud (Mia) Grenfell and a sister, Jeanette (Norman) Miller. A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Almost Home Animal Shelter in Dave’s memory. A friend of Dave’s shared that after hearing of his passing, he woke up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. He chuckled as he thought to himself, “Now, it’s God’s turn to deal with Dave!” Condolences may be expressed to the family of David Grenfell online at www.ernashfuneralhomes.com The family has entrusted Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home with the arrangements.
