Walter Johnson

IRON MOUNTAIN - Walter Johnson, 83, also known as Log Jammer, of Iron Mountain, died on Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born on Feb. 13, 1926, in Green Bay, Wis., son of the late Walter Scott and Laura Mae (Woods) Johnson. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged. He married Corrine Cramer in Iron Mountain on Oct. 14, 1950. Walter worked as a general laborer at the Niagara Paper Mill/New Page in Niagara, retiring in 1986. He has been a resident of Iron Mountain since 1950. He was a member of the American Legion Post 50, where he served as the sergeant at arms. He was a volunteer at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Administration Medical Center in Iron Mountain for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, traveling and taking pictures. He was an avid musician, and played the Follies for many years. He was currently playing music with George Hirn at HCR Manorcare Nursing Home in Kingsford. Walter is survived by his wife of 60 years, Corrine of Iron Mountain; daughters, Debbie Sexton of Detroit, Cheryl (Bob) Ray of Loretto, Carol (Jim Vivio) Thompson of Faithhorn, and Nancy (Mike) McMahon of Iron Mountain; grandchildren, Jodi Bennett, Kerri (Todd) Ruohomaki, Stacie Munday, Gwen Jones, Melinda Ray, Nichole (Jeremy) Stover, Matthew McMahon (Nikki Novara), Corey Sexton, Matt (Terra) Ray, Liz (Dan) Savoie; and many loving great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Bennett; and a son-in-law, Ed Sexton. The visitation will Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow at Friday 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. The American Legion Post 50 will accord military honors at the funeral home following the service. Burial will take place in the spring.
