Sigrid "Sunny" Thorsen-Raymond

Sigrid E. “Sunny” Thorsen Raymond, 91, of Iron Mountain passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Hyland Nursing Home. She was born May 27, 1919 in Calumet, MI, daughter of the late Arvid and Sigrid (Olsen) Hansen and moved to Kingsford as a young child. Sunny married Ralph Thorsen on October 25, 1941 in Evanston, IL, where they were both working at the time. Sunny enriched so many lives. She was a wonderful mother to five daughters, sewing their clothes , baking, cooking, canning, all while happily singing. Her sunny disposition is why her husband gave her the appropriate nickname “Sunny”. Her faith in the Lord grew even stronger through the years, especially during WWII when her husband was overseas for 4-1/2 years. She loved the Lord and reading her Bible, and her love of family was beyond measure. Sunny was proficient at knitting and crochet, and her family cherish the beautiful hand-made of keepsakes of these crafts. Sunny made friends wherever she went and was always ready to help. She was an active member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Kingsford and the First Baptist Church in Norway. Sunny enjoyed attending services and worshipping her Lord with others in the family of God. She had a heart for missions and wrote encouraging letters to missionaries as well as supporting them. Her love for God and His people was obvious. Sunny’s home was always open to whomever came by. Coffee or tea was always offered with treats. We will miss her cheerful smile and sunny ways but know Heaven has welcomed a very special person. She is survived by five daughters, Sonja (Norman) Johnson of Iron Mountain, Gail Thorsen of Niagara, Vikki Stephen of Niagara, Cindy (Denny) Lyons of Austin, TX and Darlene Thorsen of Colorado; three sisters, Lillie Wilson of Iron Mountain, Carole (Dick) Smart of Quinnesec and Donna (Jerry) Kriegl of Quinnesec; two sisters-in-law, Beverly and Florence Hansen; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Sigrid was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, in 1971; two brothers, Roy and Morris Hansen; three sisters, Ann Hansen, Ruth Trask and Randi Schmitt. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 to 8:00pm and on Thursday from 10:00 to 11:00am at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow on Thursday at 11:00am at the funeral home. Rev. Ron Wolfe will officiate. Burial will be in the Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Sunny’s grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Hyland Nursing for the exceptional and loving care given to Sunny.
