Shirley Hayes

Shirley M. Hayes, 83, of Kingsford, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2011 at Hyland Nursing Home in Iron Mountain. Shirley was born July 18, 1928 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Fredrick and Catherine (Cameron) Carlson. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1946 and was a lifelong resident of the area. Shirley married Joseph Hayes and he preceded her in death in 1992. She worked as a sales clerk and flower arranger at a few area businesses which included Miller Floral, Daniels House of Gifts and Cards and Edie's Home Interiors. Shirley was an active member of American Martyrs Church where she was involved in St. Barbara's Circle. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed sewing, cooking, working in her vegetable and flower gardens and playing cards with friends in her neighborhood. Shirley loved spending time with family, especially her grandchildren. She is survived by a daughter, Julie (Michael) Windell of Aurora; a son, Jon Hayes of Iron Mountain; her daughter-in-law, Linda Hayes of Quinnesec; three brothers, Fredrick "Fritz" (Ruth) Carlson of Iron Mountain, Jon (Sue) Carlson of Florida and Gary (Kay) Carlson of Iron Mountain; two sisters, Elaine (Don) Yuhasey and Joyce (Guy) Yuhasey, both of Iron Mountain; six grandchildren, Adam (Heather) Hayes, Kelly Hayes (Mat Trindal), Ryan (DeAnn) Windell, Dustin Windell (Jennifer Richie), Eric Windell and Jacalyn Windell (Mark Johnson); three great grandchildren, Kyle and Abby Windell and Signe Trindal; and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Hayes and a brother, Doug Carlson. Visitation will be held on Friday, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Kingsford Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00am on Friday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. Shirley's grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
