Roy Hamari

Roy O. Hamari, 80, of Kingsford, went to be with his Lord and Saviour on Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay, Wis. He was born on April 16, 1930, in Kingsford , the son of the late Toivo and Hilda (Rytioja) Hamari. Roy graduated from Kingsford High School in 1947 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He married Garon Piper in 1957 in Waukegan, Ill. As newlyweds, the couple lived in West Allis, Wis., before moving back to Kingsford. Roy worked as a heavy equipment operator for Hanna Mining at the Groveland Mine. He then worked at the Kingsford Housing Commission as a maintenance man before retiring. Roy was a great family man who enjoyed spending lots of time with his family and especially loved talking with his grandchildren and hearing about all that was going on in their lives. Roy was known for his strong bear hugs. He put his heart and soul into those hugs. In his younger years, Roy enjoyed ski jumping and was one of the "Flying Hamaris" along with his brothers. Roy also enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and swimming. He was an avid fan of the Detroit Lions and the Michigan State Spartans. Most importantly, Roy was a God fearing man, who had a very strong faith and love for the Lord. Roy is survived by his wife, Garon; one daughter Joni, (Randy) Reed of Kingsford; three sons, Michael (Gina) Hamari of Chanhassen, Minn., Mark (Kim) Hamari of Boulder City, Nev., and Matthew Hamari of Coon Rapids, Minn.; one sister, Helen Wickman of Kingsford; three brothers, Rueben (Barbara) Hamari of Iron Mountain, Don (Marge) Hamari of Kingsford, and Allen (Kathy) Hamari of New Brighton, Minn.; five granddaughters, Nicole (Justin Enberg) Hamari, Christina Hamari, Katie Hamari, Jamie (Kevin Monroe) Reed, and Allie Reed; a special nephew, Bob (Mary Ellen) Bryja; and many other special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Julie Hamari; two sisters, Hilka Bartolameolli and Lila Makela; and one brother, Dwayne Hamari. Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Maranatha Assembly of God Church. Funeral services will be Saturday at 12 noon at the church. Rev. David Wilton will officiate. Burial will be in Quinnesec Cemetery. Graveside military rites will be accorded by the Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post 50. Condolences to the family of Roy O.
