Phyllis Spangler

Phyllis "Verle" Spangler, 88, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully to be with her Lord, on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. Verle was born Sept. 22, 1922, in Dunbar, Wis., the third of eight children of the late Arthur and Maude (Seymour) Chandler. After graduating from Iron Mountain High School in 1941 and unable to find employment, she left Iron Mountain and worked for Burroughs Corporation in Detroit. As a punch press operator, she assisted in building wings for planes during the war. She married William Spangler on May 4, 1946, and together they had four children. He preceded her in death on Sept. 20, 1970. Insisting that her most important role was raising her children, she remained a stay-at-home mom. She was an excellent cook and homemaker. She managed the Econowash Laundromat locally for many years. Verle was a kind and loving mother, always wanting to help out in whatever way she could. She loved to play cards, especially cribbage and taught many of her grandchildren how to play. Verle was dependant on dialysis for the last eight years of her life. She was cared for and fondly known as "Doctor Phyl" by the staff at the dialysis unit. She leaves her beloved children, William (Darla West) Spangler of LaPorte, Texas, Doris (Tom) Dishaw of Quinnesec, Margaret "Peg" (Robert) VanVickle of League City, Texas and Mary (Dave) McMahon of Kingsford; two brothers Maurice (Marcellien) Chandler of Cooks and William (Joanne) Chandler of Iron Mountain; her sisters, Jean (Al) Antonini of Sun City, Ariz. and Barbara Chandler of Arizona; special grandmother, to Kevin Ty (Linda) Kuhn, Wade (Lesley) Dishaw, Jon (Kristi) Kuhn, Kristi (Brian) Olson, Carly (Jason) Mazur, Erin (Chris) Wilkey, Marc (Sarah) Unrein, Veronica (Ben Thomas) Spangler, Ian (Lindsey) Weber, and Cody Weber; step-grandson, Dean McMahon; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Blake Dishaw, Brooke and Kailee Kuhn, Isaac and Cassandra Olson, Adyson and Sunny Weber, Cameron Mazur and Emily Unrein; a special daughter-in-law, Waverly Spangler and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins. Also by a special friend, Vern Sorenson. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her eldest sister, Harriet Luciani, eldest brother, John "Chic" Chandler and younger sister, Doris Kroll. Graveside services will be held on Monday at 12 noon at Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
