Norman C. "Jeff" Sjoquist

Norman C. (Jeff) Sjoquist, 74, of Breitung Township, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2015, at Dickinson County Hospital System with his loving family at his side. Norman was born on November 30, 1940 in Iron Mountain. He was the son of Clifford and Vera Sjoquist and raised in Homestead, Wisconsin. He graduated from Florence High School in 1958. He married Gloria K. McMahon on January 27, 1962 at the Homestead Baptist Church. Norm and Gloria raised three children and resided in Kingsford, Michigan for 44 years. Norm was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. He was very active in church activities and helped out with many events. He was on the Board of Trustees for several terms and was currently on the Board of Elders. Norm’s faith in God was the central focus of his life. He worked at Wittock Supply for over 20 years was a partner in starting Prime Supply Company in 1992. Norm retired from Prime Supply in 2003 and was currently Chairman of their Board of Directors. Norm was active member in the early years of the Kingsford High School Athletic Booster Club and a member of the Kingsford Civil Service Commission for many years. Norm was a very proud grandfather and thoroughly enjoyed attending his grandchild’s sporting and extracurricular events. He also enjoyed going to his camp in Amasa, Michigan with his children, grandchildren and friends. He spent a lot of time on his 1947 Farmall “A” tractor doing work on his projects at camp. He was well known and had many friends in the Iron County and Dickinson County areas. He enjoyed deer hunting and took many trips to Wyoming where he had successful mule deer hunts with his family and friends. He mentored many in the joy of experiencing the woods and creating good friendships. Norm was an excellent baseball player in his younger years and was known for his speed and competitive nature on the field. He also coached baseball at many levels and passed on his passion and knowledge of the game. He maintained the fields for many youth baseball seasons and meticulously kept the score book. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, Green Bay Packers and Kingsford Flivvers. He also enjoyed golfing and celebrating time with family and friends. Norm’s family and friends were the highlights of his life and his legacy will be his Christian faith, loving nature and hard work ethic. Norm made friends everywhere he went and could strike up conversations and laughs with everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Vera Sjoquist and Father-in Law and Mother-in-Law George and Arlene McMahon. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Gloria Sjoquist; children Jeff (Nanette) Sjoquist of Kingsford, Jamie (Donna) Sjoquist of Amasa and Julie (Gary) Miller of Kingsford; grandchildren Fr. Bradley Sjoquist, Daniel (Jordan) Sjoquist, Alicia Miller, Jacob Miller (fiancée Calyn), and Robert Pavatto; one great grandchild, Logan Pavatto; brothers Lloyd (Gerri) Sjoquist and Don (Rosemary) Sjoquist; sisters Barbara (Richard) Olson and Carol (Bob) Lohr; sisters-in law Sheila (William) Burby and Sally (Alan) Peterson; brother-in-law Alan (Nancy Schuls) McMahon; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 28 from 9 a.m. until noon at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. The funeral service will be held at noon at the church with a luncheon to follow. The Reverend Thomas Mackey will officiate and burial will be in the Homestead-Aurora Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his five grandchildren and son-in law Gary Miller.
