Mildred Verley

Mildred J. "Brownie" Verley, 103, died peacefully on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at her home in Quinnesec. She was born on Jan. 30, 1908 in Negaunee, MI the daughter of the late Frank and Harriet (Eyler) Tippett. Brownie eloped to marry Ralph H. Verley on June 5, 1926. After seventy seven years of marriage, Ralph preceded her in death on Feb. 27, 2003. She is survived by four children, Lois (Bruce) Ring of Iron Mountain, Norman (Evelyn) Verley of Quinnesec, Della (Ron) VanAlstine of Quinnesec and Susan (Charles) Kempf of Quinnesec; a daughter in law, Irene Verley of Wyoming; eleven grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren, and numerous great great grandchildren. For the past two years Brownie spent most days at Family Ties in the Community Center and leaves several good friends there among the staff and other residents. In addition, Linda Henning was a daily caregiver who assisted Brownie on a daily basis. Both Family Ties and Linda were instrumental in fulfilling Brownie's wish to remain at her own home and for that, the family will be forever grateful. In addition to her parents and her husband, Brownie was preceded in death by her son Ralph Jr., three brothers and five sisters. As a young girl Brownie worked in housekeeping for the Flyn Hotel in Iron Mountain. While residing in Grand Ledge, Michigan, she worked in the Craft Shop of the Grand Ledge Adventist Academy. Both Ralph and Brownie were members and very active in the Seventh-day Adventist Church here in Iron Mountain. Other than the brief period in which she lived in Grand Ledge, Michigan, Brownie spent her life in Quinnesec. Above all else, Brownie loved and worshipped The Lord. She spent her life loving and caring for her large and extended family. Her hobbies included crocheting, needlework, crafting, gardening and canning preserves. She loved animals and recently spent much of her time watching the deer and birds outside of her window. She liked to rescue animals in need and over the years took in, loved and cared for many stray cats. On her 100th Birthday, when asked what she attributed her longevity to, she replied, "I never get angry". Memorial services are being planned for sometime in the Spring and will be announced at a later date.
