Mary Caviani

Mary Caviani, 94, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2010, at Superior Woods Nursing Home in Ypsilanti. Mary was born July 4, 1916, in Iron Mountain to the late Nazzareno and Esther (Bartelli) Manci. She was alifelong resident of Iron Mountain and had moved to the Ann Arbor area eight years ago to be with her sons and their families. She married her husband, Ernest "Pines" Caviani in 1939 in Iron Mountain, and he preceded her in death in 1974. In her younger years, Mary worked as a hairdresser at her sister Ceil'sVanity Beauty Shop. She loved to travel and read. Mary was an avid bridge player and enjoyed the friendships she made in her bridge clubs. She was so excited about cooking and baking as early as age five that her family had a miniature rolling pin made for her. She cherished her sons, daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She is especially remembered for always being there for family and friends in times of illness, distress, or need. Mary was a member of St. Maryand St. Joseph Church in Iron Mountain. She was one of the first volunteers at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital and also volunteered for many years at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center. Survivors include two sons, Ernest Caviani Jr. and Jerry (Cindy) Caviani of Ann Arbor; grandchildren, Darren Caviani, Sara Schmidt, Gary Kelner, and Tom Kelner.She also leaves manyloving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Rudy and James Manci; four sisters, Elvira Angeli, Carmella Manci, Ceil Tavanotti, and Augusta Thate; and a daughter-in-law, Evelyn Caviani. Visitation will be Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Tondin-Ross & Freeman Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Daniel Zaloga will officiate. A luncheon will be held at Pine Grove Country Club after the service. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
