John H. Hanson

John H. Hanson, 86, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 the Iron County Medical Care Facility in Crystal Falls. He was born January 5, 1931 in Kingsford, MI, son of the late Carl and Ingabourg (Johnson) Hanson. John graduated from Kingsford High School in 1949 and was a lifelong resident of the area. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War Era earning the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal with European Clasp. John married Nora Pozza on August 9, 1952 in Philadelphia, PA. He was employed at Lakeshore, Inc. as a cost accountant for 33 years, retiring in 1989. John was a member of St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, the American Legion Post 363 and Wildlife Unlimited where he and Charlie Peterson were instrumental in bringing wild turkeys to Dickinson County. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting with his dogs. He also enjoyed throwing horseshoes and played with the Partonen Ringers. John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nora; a son, Gregg (Debra) Hanson of Green Bay; a daughter, Sue (John) Carlson of Sagola; grandchildren, Valerie (Jessie) Oskey, Nick (Betsy) Hanson, Wesley (Jessica) Hanson, Jodi (Jeff) Caler, Nick (Paula) Carlson, Jennifer (Dan) Nelson, Brooke (Brad) Knaus and Abby (Steve) Perry; 12 great grandchildren with another on the way; a sister-in-law, Delores Weber; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena Varvil; a brother, Leonard Hanson; and a brother-in-law, George Weber.. Visitation will be held on Friday from 9:00 to 10:30 am at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A Memorial Mass will be offered at 11:00 am on Friday at St. Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Michael Woempner will officiate. Burial with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 363 will be held in the spring at Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
