Joan F. Mitchell

Joan F. Mitchell, 91, of Kingsford passed away peacefully on Friday, July 8, 2022, in the comfort of her own home. Joan was born on Aug. 3, 1930, in Chilton, WI, daughter of the late Ray and Marie (Harkins) Millay. She attended St. Augustine Grade School and Chilton High School, graduating in 1948. Joan worked as a bookkeeper until 1951, when she met and married Duane Mitchell, who was in the U.S. Coast Guard. They moved to Sturgeon Bay while Duane was stationed on different islands. Joan worked in the personnel office at the shipyard until her first son was born. When Duane was transferred, they moved to Upper Michigan. When he went overseas, Joan and her children moved back to Chilton. After Duane retired from the Coast Guard the family moved to Butte, MT, where Joan worked at Crest Nursing Home for 9 years. They moved to Iron Mountain in 1995, where Joan worked as a home health aide and for NorthPointe for 19 years. She is survived by her sons, David, Terence (Cathy), Russel (Ava) and Robert (Michele); son-in-law, Bob Thompson; 16 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1997; son Joseph in 2010; and a daughter, Lori in 2012; her six siblings as well as her husband’s six siblings. Joan’s family would like to thank Art Mitchell and Kathy MItchell for the many years of love and care they gave to their mother. We would also want to thank our mother’s close neighbors for being there for her. A very special thank you to Jerry Palmcook for keeping mother’s home and yard so beautiful for many years. Our mother greatly appreciated his friendship. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 15 from 9:00 to 11:00 am at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral mass will follow at 11:30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Cemetery Park.
