James B. Saxon

James B. “Sax” Saxon, 71, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the Marshfield Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Jim was born October 4, 1951 in Waukegan, IL, son of the late Wayne and Ruth (Gustafson) Saxon. He graduated from Kingsford High School in 1969 and attended college in Milwaukee, WI to become a draftsman. Jim soon realized that a career as a draftsman was not for him, and he moved back to the area. He was hired by the Kennedy family as a mechanic at the Twin City Texaco where he spent many years. Jim then became a part owner of Modern Laundry service. Eventually that business was sold to Dickinson County Hospital and Jim took a position at the hospital, in the laundry department. He delivered not only the linens, but a smile and a kind word to others he came in contact with. He retired from the hospital in 2013 after 25 years of service. Jim married Susan Johnson on September 21, 2002. He was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain and a 50+ year, life-time member of the Kiwanis Ski Club. Jim loved going to camp and feeding the deer and ducks in his yard. He was actively involved with baseball and softball in the area, from a young age. From a player to a coach to an umpire. He enjoyed spending time with his family and supporting anything that his kids and grandkids were involved in. He was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He will be sadly missed. Jim is survived by his wife, Sue; three children, Liz (Curtis) Schenk of Watonga, OK, Kim (Ernesto) Fernandez of Thomas, OK, and Derek (Kaitlyn) Saxon of Appleton, WI; seven grandchildren, Abrianna, Jeremiah and Caleb Fernandez, Olivia and Sydney Hampton, and Charlotte and Emma Saxon; his siblings, Charlene Krafski and Shirley (Larry) Schmidt, both of Wichita, KS, Randy (Betty) Saxon of Elizabethtown, KY, and Nancy (Nicky) Buchcuski-Shimwela of Iron Mountain, MI and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania; a brother-in-law, Tom (Debbie) Johnson of Rochelle, IL; a sister-in-law, Kris Saxon of Kingsford; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert “Bob” Saxon and two brothers-in-law, Kurt Krafski and Bill Buchcuski. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon on Friday, January 6 at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. A memorial service will follow at 12 noon at the funeral home. Rev. Stephen Cowen will officiate.
