Herbert Smith

Herbert A. Smith 86, of Breitung Twp., passed away on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012 at Freeman Health and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford. Herbert was born on December 6, 1925 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Charles and Alma (Rudquist) Smith. Herbert was raised in this area and was a 1943 graduate of Kingsford High School. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as an Aviation Ordinanceman during WWII. His military service included the Asiatic-Pacific. Herbert was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. He married the former Jane Fezatt on August 13, 1949 in Iron Mountain. Herbert was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola, Carpenter-Clash American Legion Post 363 and a former Breen Twp. volunteer fireman. Herb worked for Kleiman Pump and Well Drilling for several years. He loved the outdoors and being in the woods. His life was farming and logging and whether it was cutting pulp, trimming Christmas tree's, tending his cattle or gardening, he enjoyed it all. In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by his son, Henry "Butch" Smith; his son in law, Jeff Wallner and his sister, Marge Randall. Herbert is survived by his wife of sixty two years, Jane; three children, Linda Wallner of Ishpeming, Craig (Denise Smith) of Cornell and Tim Smith of Iron Mountain; his brother, Fred (Lorna) Smith of Elyria, Ohio; his sister, Mary Lou Burdorff of Grafton, Ohio; brothers-in-law, Kennith (Mic) Fezatt of Port Washington, WI and Darrel (Bobbie) Fezatt of Marquette; seven grandchildren, Jason (Sara) Wallner, Andrew (Jen) Wallner, Steven Wallner, Matthew (Katie) Smith, Michael (Lindsey) Smith, Kristin and T.J. Smith; four great grandchildren, Ethan, Amara and Kaylen Wallner and Sophia Smith. Visitation will be on Saturday, March 3 from 10:00-12:00 noon at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home. Memorial services will be on Saturday at 12:00 noon at the funeral home. Vance Jones and Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
