Harold Charlevoix

HARDWOOD - Harold Charlevoix, 80, of Hardwood, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. He was born on Sept. 1, 1926, in Detroit, son of the late Steven and Margaret (Murray) Charlevoix. He and his family moved here from Detroit when he was 17 and he graduated from Felch High School. He married Alice Robinette in 1949 in Milwaukee, at St. Anthony Church. While in Milwaukee, he worked for Harley Davidson and Nash. He also played minor league baseball for the AAA ball club in Oconomowoc, Wis., where he pitched several no hitters. Upon moving back to Hardwood, Harold worked at the Foster City Cheese Factory for a short time before becoming an equipment operator and foreman for the Dickinson County Road Commission for 33 years until his retirement in 1988. He spent his entire life working hard, whether it was with the road commission driving his grader or working with his father at his dad's garage in Foster City every Saturday. Harold was also known for being there for his children, grandchildren, and anyone in need of help with any kind of project. While in Hardwood he played baseball for the Tri-County League, Foster City-Hardwood Bluebirds, and later played many years for the Felch Rangers. His love of baseball led him to coach the Hardwood Wood Ticks little league team. He was known to most as Harold "Pappy" Charlevoix during his baseball years. He loved hunting, playing golf, woodworking, and played a mean hand of cribbage. He enjoyed building airplane models, the bigger the better and he would fly them at home. He also built an airplane from a kit, and all it needed was the engine to be flown. He was a wonderful artist and had a real talent for putting things together. He loved all kids and was one of those people whom all kids loved, even those who didn't know him. Being at camp with family brought him great joy; he especially loved spending time with his kids, grandkids, great-grandkids and always had a treat for the family pets. Harold was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Foster City. Harold is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alice (Robinette) Charlevoix of Hardwood; children, Kathy (Butch) Dabb of Iron Mountain, Don (Teresa Grunlund) Charlevoix of Vulcan, and Gary (Lorna Lavigne) Charlevoix of Escanaba; brothers, Robert Charlevoix of Wakefield and Steve (Marilyn) Charlevoix of Foster City; sister, Jan (Pat) Milligan of Foster City; grandchildren Jeff (Tina) Dabb, Jodi (Dan) Mitts, Joe Charlevoix, Holly Charlevoix, Jill Leisner, Stacy Leisner, and Kari Charlevoix; and great-grandchildren, Todd Edwards and MaKenna Dabb. Harold is also survived by numerous friends and family. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kay Ann Carl and a granddaughter, Crystal Kay Charlevoix. The visitation is scheduled for Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow at 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Fr. Dick Mroz will officiate. Burial will be at the Foster City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in his memory.
