Grace Seronko

Grace E. Seronko, 91, (also referred to as "Amazing Grace") by her daughter, Michele, passed away at Maryhill Manor on May 10, 2012 with her family by her side. She was born in Cook County, IL on March 23, 1921, daughter of the late Bernice Salvage and Walter Markus and stepmother, Vi Markus and stepfather, Roy Benedict. She graduated from Kingsford High School in 1939. After high school, she went to San Francisco, CA and was employed by the U.S. Navy as a Draftswoman. She would tour the war ships to assess the damages and then draw up a blueprint so the engineers would know where to do their repairs. Grace married George Seronko, Jr. on August 23, 1945. He preceded her in death October 5, 1991. Grace was a member of American Martyrs Church and active in St. Rita's Circle in helping & serving funeral masses. Grace was kind, sweet, caring, strong and compassionate lady. She was also a 3-time cancer survivor! She was also a brilliant artist and loved to oil paint. She painted about 40 paintings, which she donated to charities and raffles. Her paintings were also enjoyed by many family members. Grace was also employed at the first K.F.C. in the very back of the historical Dickinson Inn in Iron Mountain. She was also employed at Isabel's Clothing store and Colenso's Clothing store for many years. She loved her family and enjoyed getting together for cook-outs. She will be deeply missed by all that knew and loved her. Grace is survived by a daughter, Michele Ray of Iron Mountain, (Rodney Ray of Kingsford); a son, Ken Seronko of Hoffman Estates, IL; sister, Beverly (Ted) Gronczewski of Orland Park, IL; two grandsons, Adam (DeAnna) Ray of Kingsford and Darren (Jen) Ray of Appleton, WI; two very special great-grandchildren, Devon Oslund-Ray and Mikayla Ray; a special neice, Betty Piirto; and several other nieces and nephews. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, George, her parents, a brother, Joe and her special friend, Rose Mattson. She loved everyone on staff and they loved her at her final home, Maryhill Manor in Niagara, WI. Grace referred to it as "The Hilton" of Nursing Homes! A memorial Mass will be held at 11:00am on Monday at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in Quinnesec Cemetery.
