Gertrude L. Corrigan

Gertrude L. Corrigan 88, of Kingsford, passed away on Thursday October 29, 2015 at Dickinson County Healthcare System after a brief illness. Gert was born on July 2, 1927 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Calvin and Helen (Johnson) Root. She was a 1944 graduate of Vulcan High School. Gert married Thomas Corrigan of Spalding on September 6, 1945 in the UP, but they relocated to Milwaukee for many years, retiring to Kingsford in the early 1980's. Tom preceded her in death in 2000. While in Milwaukee, Gert worked in the home decorating office for J.C. Penney Co. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church where she served as an altar guild member and was ordained as a deacon. She served as a visiting minister for Dickinson County Hospital. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #44. Gert was a lifetime student, always fascinated by history and cultures, and enjoyed new adventures while traveling. She had a warm sense of humor and fun. She loved attempting crafts with her neighborhood friends, and made special quilts for both her grandchildren. She also enjoyed the company of her Red Hat ladies, and kept up longtime friendships with many from her childhood. Gert was devoted to her family. She is survived by her son, Michael (Cheryl) Corrigan of Alpharetta, GA; her brother, Lloyd Root of Milwaukee, WI; two grandchildren, Kelly (Matt) Beck of Woodstock, GA and Adam (Jessica) Corrigan of Woodstock, GA; three great-grandchildren, Keegan and Molly Beck and Mattie Corrigan. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 4th, from 10:00 to 11:00am at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home of Iron Mountain. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Reverend Lynn Sand will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilson Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her memory to the Smile Train, (www.SmileTrain.org), an organization important to Gert as she wanted to help bring children the ability to smile.
