Elsie Zigman

Elsie M. Zigman, 91, of Niagara, died on Wed. May 25, 2011at Maryhill Manor in Niagara. She was born on July 12, 1919 in Norway, the daughter of the late August and Clementina (Durinck) Van Wiele. She is survived by her daughter Judith (Timothy) Phillips of Niagara, her daughter-in-law Nancy Zigman of Kingsford, five grandchildren Daniel (Donna) Phillips of Granger, IN, Todd (Carmel) Phillips of East Haven, CT, Steve (Carrie) Zigman of Niagara, Anne Marie (Michael) Kirschner of Racine, WI, and Mary (Timm) Fornetti of Iron Mountain, 6 great grandchildren David and Emily Phillips of Granger, IN, Meagan Phillips of Branford, CT, Ashley and Nicholas Kirschner of Racine, WI, and Brooke Fornetti of Iron Mountain and one great-great granddaughter Ava May Swiderski of Branford, CT. Her nieces and nephews include Carol (Swen) Sjoquist of Aurora, Richard (Betty) Haferkorn of Aurora, David Haferkorn of Milwaukee, Patty (Duford) Carlson of Iron Mountain, Larry Duford of Iron Mountain, Robert Zigman of Iron Mountain and Donald (Norma) Zigman of Hales Corners, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Jacob Zigman, her son John Zigman, and 4 sisters Marcella Haferkorn, Sister M. Raphael, Julia Kwetkowski and Mary VanWiele and two brothers Julius and Frank Van Wiele. Elsie lived in Niagara for over 50 years before moving back to her home town of Norway. While she lived in Norway she was a member of St. Mary’s Parish. She enjoyed many friends in both Niagara and Norway. She was a member of St. Anthony's parish in Niagara and a member of the Christian Mothers. She also was the cook and housekeeper for Father Carl Steiner for 9 years. Elsie was always there when friends or neighbors needed her. She loved to cook, care for her flowers and knit. She knitted numerous afghans, baby sweater sets and hunting socks and gave them to friends and relatives. Visitation will be from 10-11am on Fri. at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Funeral services will be at 11:00am at the church. Father Matthew Settle will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Mass will be followed by a lunch in the church hall and after the lunch, interment will be in the Niagara Cemetery.
