Elizabeth "Betty" Ebel Mitchell

Elizabeth “Betty” Ebel Mitchell, 92, of Spread Eagle, died peacefully with her daughter Mary at her side on Sat. July 29, 2017 at Evergreen Assisted Living in Kingsford. She was born on March 18, 1925 in Iron Mountain, the daughter of the late Albert and Genevieve (Godin) Ebel. She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1942. She attended the Milwaukee Business School and after returning to Iron Mountain worked at Liberty Loan and married Donnell R. “Mitch” Mitchell on Feb.1, 1947 at the rectory of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Betty was an active member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Pine Grove County Club, the Chippewa Club, the Tuesday Study Club, the Hospital League, Iron Mountain –Kingsford Women’s Club and the 100 Plus Women’s Club. Betty enjoyed reading, baking and playing bridge. She was an excellent seamstress and knitter. She took up golf later in life and even had a hole in one! Betty was a proud stay at home mom and considered her most meaningful and important achievements making a home for her husband, raising their six children, and enjoying her grandchildren. Betty had an open door policy – anyone was welcome at any time. Betty and Mitch enjoyed traveling and spending time in Spread Eagle in the summer and winters in Ft Myers, FL. They were avid Packer fans and season ticket holders from day one at Lambeau Field. Mitch preceded her in death on Dec. 3, 2003. Betty is survived by her children, Maureen Piper of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Jeffrey (Christina) Mitchell of Grayslake, IL, Fred Mitchell of Iron Mountain, Mary (Tim) Endelman of Iron Mountain, Michael Mitchell of London, England, and Patricia (Jeff) Lemke of Cary, IL, ten grandchildren Natalie, Jordan, and Laura Mitchell; Maureen and Fred Mitchell; Elizabeth and Tim Endelman: and Mitchell, Lucy, and Gavin Lemke, three great grandchildren Gabe, Elaine and Dilan, and her beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Betty was preceded in death by her dear sister Lorraine Vielmetti. Visitation will be Friday, August 4, 2017 from 10:00 -11:00 am at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Friday at the church. Father Joseph Gouin will officiate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Cemetery Park. Betty’s children will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Menominee Range Historical Society or the Alzheimer’s Association.
