Elizabeth M. "Betty" Cook

Elizabeth "Betty" Cook, 83, of Felch, died Wed. Dec. 24, 2014, at Freeman's Nursing and Rehabilitation Community. She was born on June 15, 1931, in Wakefield, MI. the daughter of the late John and Lydia (Anderson) Williams. She graduated from Wakefield High School in 1949 and then attended Walther School of Nursing in Chicago where she earned her degree as a registered nurse. She moved to Pasadena, CA, where she worked as a surgical nurse. She came back to Michigan and found work at the VA Medical Center as an RN. During the time she worked at the VA Medical Center, Betty met, and then later married, Carlton Cook on June 9, 1956, in Wakefield, MI. The couple settled in Kingsford, and in 1961 they moved to Felch. Betty was one of the founding members of the Nordic Ambulance, where she served as an EMT for over 20 years. Betty was also the camp nurse at Camp Sanford and volunteered as a Victims Advocate for Dickinson County Betty was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan, Women of Zion, Zion's quilting group and a Sunday School teacher for many years. She is survived by her husband Carlton; five children: William (Patti) Cook of Felch, Bernard (Brenda) Cook of Minneapolis, Ann-Louise (Jeff) Ebert of Petoskey, Robert (Charlene) Cook of Naubinway and Sharon (Steve) Opolka of Iron Mountain, one brother Richard (Sonja) Williams of Parma, OH, two sisters-in-law Mary Williams of Milwaukee and Jane Williams of Baltimore. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Alena (Jason) Rodriguez, Andrew Cook, Aaron (Mallory Carlson) Cook, Alec (Megan) Cook, Carlton Cook, Chris Nygard, Crystal Nygard, Matthew Opolka, and Nicholas Opolka, four great grandchildren Javon Nygard, Caitlyn Rodriguez, Kara Rodriguez, and Jeffrey Cook, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by four brothers John, George, Kenneth, and the Rev. Robert Williams. Visitation will be Monday from 9-11am at Zion Lutheran Church in Metropolitan. Funeral services will follow at 11am at the church. The Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in the Felch Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
