Dorothy "Dort" Vermulen

Dorothy A. (Dort) Vermulen, 91, of Channing, passed away on Monday, November 9, 2015, at Northstar Health System in Iron River. She was born on August 20, 1924, in Daggett Township, Michigan, daughter of the late Theodore and Hilma (Pelto) Bloom. The family eventually moved to Channing where she graduated from high school in 1941. She met her husband of 50 years, Leonard (Bud) Vermulen, in Channing, and they were married on August 20, 1943, in Chicago. The couple moved many times throughout the years, transferring with Bud’s employment until finally returning to Channing in 1965. He preceded her in death in 1994. Dorothy worked for the Falls Clinic in Crystal Falls for nearly 40 years as a billing specialist until her retirement in 2004 at the age of 80. As an active member of the Sagola Township Community, she always helped where needed whether it was the Cuculi-Baraga Legion Auxillary, Sagola Township Sportmens Club, or any community project needing a helping hand. Dorothy was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. She served on the session committee, was a lay minister, past commissioner to the Presbytery, past treasurer for the Women’s Association, chaired many church fundraisers, was a bible study member, and choir member, especially enjoying choosing hymns for Sunday worship. She always had a special place in her heart for Pastor Dave. Dorothy is survived by her three children, Erik (Bonita) Vermulen of Dillon, Colorado, Jeffery (Kristine Coopman) Vermulen of Channing, MI, Leanne (Daniel) Formolo of Iron Mountain, MI; 4 grandchildren, Leah (Ricardo) Lopez of Denver, CO, Kirsten (Scott) Vermulen Banning of Denver, CO, Bryan (Jamie) Formolo of Iron Mountain, MI, Timothy (Amanda) Formolo of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; 1 great grandchild, Amelie Lopez of Denver, CO.: sister-in-law and close friend, Jean Bloom of Channing, MI; and many loving nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Robert and Calvin (Sonny) Bloom; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Bloom, Jean Vermulen, Edna Rossi, and Violet Barrs; brothers-in-law, Maurice Vermulen, Victor Rossi, and Edward Barrs. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Iron County Medical Care Facility for their tender loving care over the past 3 years and to Northstar Health System for their kind and compassionate hospice care during her hospitalization. The visitation will be held on Friday, November 13, 2015, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Grace Presbyterian Church in Sagola. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 am at the church. Rev. David Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Channing Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory. Condolences to the family of Dorothy A.
