Dorothy Y. Granquist

Dorothy Yvonne Granquist, 96, of Iron Mountain peacefully went to her eternal rest on September 21, 2014 at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital while surrounded by her family following a brief illness. She was born on January 7, 1918 in Iron Mountain, Michigan to the late Albert and Appalonia (Brockington) Winters. As the youngest of seven children, strong family values were instilled at a young age. As a child and young adult, Dorothy was the primary caretaker of her blind mother until her mother's passing. On December 23, 1939, she married the late Thure (Terry) Granquist at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He preceded her in death in 1983. She was a lifelong resident of the west side of Iron Mountain, Michigan. Dorothy was a kind, gentle women who loved to spend time with her family. She loved family gatherings and telling stories of the old days. Her kitchen never lacked in delicious homemade baked goods, especially her Special K treats. She also was a devoted Packers fan and never missed watching a game. She was a lifelong member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and a Sunday School teacher for several years. Dorothy's kind demeanor touched many lives and she will be greatly missed by many family and friends. Dorothy is survived by her only child, Dorothy Arlene (Alvin) Peterson of Aurora, Wisconsin; one grandchild, Christina Peterson of Green Bay, Wisconsin; one sister-in-law, Jeanette Granquist of Iron Mountain, Michigan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, she was proceeded in death by her three brothers, Charles Winters, Clyde Winters, and Roy Winters; three sisters, Margaret Noel, Louise Alexander, and Inez Dault; four brother-in-laws, Leonard (Lorraine) Granquist, Ernest Granquist, Carl (Elsie) Granquist, and Leslie (Edna) Granquist; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Visitation will be held on Friday, September 26 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 with Pastor Lee Liverance officiating. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park. The pallbearers will be Ernie "Skip" Larson, Dennis Larson, Bill Larson, David Larson, Daniel Granquist, and Alan Granquist, who are all nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Arthur Noel, nephew, and Alvin Peterson, son-in-law. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established.
