Doris Nelson

Doris Nelson, 87, of Iron Mountain, passed away on Monday, May 30, 2016 at the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. Doris was born on Feb. 24, 1929, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Richard and Marietta (Hawkins) Skog. She attended the Vulcan School. Upon leaving school, she moved to Detroit where she worked as a long-distance operator for the Michigan Bell Telephone Company and later for the Bower Roller Bearing Company. On Dec. 20, 1947, she married Clarence "Roy" Nelson. He preceded her in death on Oct. 14, 2000. After they married, Doris and Roy moved to Minnesota where she worked for Super Value in the packaging department. They later returned to Upper Michigan to live on the Skog family farm in Waucedah, farming for several years. Doris also worked at Norway Gravure for 25 years. Doris was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Norway. She enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, puzzles and watching her favorite soap opera, Days of Our Lives. .She is survived by her three daughters, Ann (Edward) Wilson of Eastpointe, MI, Ginger (Robert) Girardi of Vulcan, and Jill (Daniel) Girardi of Vulcan; six grandchildren, Lisa (Scott) LaFreniere, Lynette (Alfredo Perez) Wilson, Travis (Kristie) Girardi, Jeannie (Larry) Tarr, Ryan (Jeanine) Girardi, and Devon (Shawn) Van Slooten; nine great grandchildren, Thomas, Emily, Lindsie, Amber, James, Ashton, Nathan, Sawyer, Tyler; one great-great grandchild, Clayton; a sister, Fern Simon of Green Bay, WI, and a brother, James Skog of Indian River; special cousin, Betty Brocker of Iron Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Doris was preceded in death by her brothers, Maurice and Gordon Skog; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marie Skog, Marge Skog, Bernard and Marion Nelson, Arthur and Marge Nelson, Alfred and Elma Nelson, Harold and Mabel Nelson, Harold and Victoria Anderson, Rafael and Esther Mattson, and Steve and Mabel (Mim) Mikel. The visitation will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Erickson-Rochon and Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home. Pastor Michael Langlais will officiate. Interment will be in Cemetery Park in Iron Mountain. In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in her memory.
