David H. Smart

David H. Smart 82, of Kingsford, passed away on, June 29, 2016 at Manor Care Nursing Home in Kingsford. David was born on January 18, 1934 in Iron Mountain, the third son of the late Howard and Hazel (Bates) Smart and has been a lifelong resident of this area. He grew up on the farm in Randville and graduated from Channing High School in 1951. After graduating, David joined the United States Air Force and served in Germany and France until his honorable discharge. He married Betty Fontecchio on March 9, 1973 in Kingsford. David worked as a maintenance mechanic for the Groveland Mine for many years, retiring in 1981. He then returned to work and was employed at Lakeshore Inc. and OCA Broach and tool for several years. David was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. He was a dedicated and passionate family man. David enjoyed gardening, camping and traveling. David also played the violin and liked to tinker with car repairs and mechanics. He was a talented handyman and remodeled several homes including helping his children with remodeling and jobs around their homes. David is survived by his wife of 43 years, Betty; his children, Lori (Tim) Bennett of Iron Mountain, Dennis (Pam) Smart of Niagara, WI, Corrina Lukesh of Niagara, Sharon (David) Antonissen of Niagara, Lene Johnson of Iron Mountain, Renee Weber of Aurora, Cliff (Alice) Schaut of Austin, Texas and Joella (Daniel) Lindlbauer of Kingsford; brother, Richard Smart of Kingsford; sisters, Barbara (Ken) Fontecchio of Wasila, Alaska and Mary Jane Smart of Kingsford; 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren; also by many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his mother and father in law, James and Lorraine Fontecchio; grandson, Cody DePas; sister, Charlotte "Pat" Sexton; two sons in law, Dan Weber and Bob Lukesh. Visitation will be on Saturday, July 2nd from 9:00am-11:00am at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kingsford. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am Saturday at the church. Rev. Thomas Mackey will officiate. Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.
