Charlotte Kujala

Charlotte M. Kujala, 80, of Kingsford, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain. She was born Feb. 23, 1931, in Birnamwood, Wis., daughter of the late Frank and Nina (Roberts) Ascher. Charlotte graduated from Antigo High School in 1949, and continued her education to obtain her certification as a licensed practical nurse (LPN). She married Leslie Kujala on Oct. 8, 1955, in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death in 1969. Charlotte was employed by the V.A. Hospital in Iron Mountain for many years, retiring in 1996. She was an active member of American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. where she sang in the choir for many years. Charlotte was presented with the Homemaker of the Year Award at the Dickinson County Fair in 2001. She was a longtime volunteer at the V.A. Medical Center and was the nurse on duty at the county fair and 4-H camp for many years. She enjoyed sewing and was a member of the Spinning Spools quilting group. Charlotte is survived by 11 children, Conrad (Pamela) Kujala, Wayne Kujala, Douglas Kujala, Theodore Kujala, Jack (Diane) Kujala, Nancy (John) D'Amour, Jean Van Winkle, Linda (Bradley) Ross, Jeffrey Kujala, Michael Kujala (James Grant), and Catherine (Mark) Swenski; two brothers, Frank (Betty) Ascher and Dwayne (Charlotte) Ascher; 36 grandchildren; 48 great- grandchildren, six great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Steven; a daughter, Fay Lemke; a great-grandson, Owen Ellis; two grandsons, Thomas Kujala and Lucas Van Winkle; and eight brothers and one sister. Visitation will be Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Erickson-Rochon & Nash Funeral Home in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Kingsford. Fr. Joseph Gouin will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Quinnesec Cemetery.
