Betty Shoquist

IRON MOUNTAIN - Betty Jean Shoquist, 85, of Iron Mountain died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 2009, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born on July 31, 1924 in Amasa, the daughter of the late William and Sanna (Peterson) Leanna. Betty graduated from Amasa High School in 1942. She married Lloyd Shoquist on Jan. 30, 1943 in Chicago. He preceded her in death in 1972. She lived in Stambaugh for many years raising her three sons. She graduated from Wayne State University with a diploma as an audiometric technician in 1961. Betty then worked as an audiometric technician for the Dickinson-Iron Health Department testing all of the school children's hearing in both Iron and Dickinson County. She then worked as a nurse's aide at Iron County General Hospital until moving to Iron Mountain in 1982 where she worked at Freeman's Convalescent Home as a nurse's aid before retiring in 1984. Betty enjoyed traveling and flowers. She also enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers and golf on TV. Betty was very dedicated to her family and enjoyed making pasties for them whenever they visited. You can see Betty's famous pasty recipe video on youtube at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcSsHOG85nA She is survived by three sons, Gary (Edie) Shoquist of Minneapolis, Thomas (Vicki) Shoquist of Orlando, Fla. and Michael (Linda) Shoquist of Iron Mountain; two brothers, William (Betty) Leanna of Boise, Ariz. and Robert (Rita) Leanna of Amasa; two sisters, Marilyn (Delos) Awrey of Iron Mountain and Nancy (Morris) Heimerl of Crystal Falls; six grandchildren, Krista Vangen, Yvette Brockman, Laurie Miller, Paul Shoquist, Carly Shoquist, and Lindsey Shoquist, 10 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by one granddaughter, Emily Jean Shoquist and four sisters, Selma, Pearl, Norma, and Margaret. Visitation will be held on Monday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the church. Rev. Lee Liverance will officiate. Burial will be in the Stambaugh Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Condolences to the family of Betty J.
